Billie Eilish is taking back her power.

Earlier this week, the 18-year-old released a short film on her official YouTube channel titled “NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY” in which the singer removes her clothing and submerges herself in water to protest body shamers.

“Do you know me? Really know me?” Billie begins in the video. “You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body.”

This is not the first time we’ve caught a glimpse of Billie’s short. In fact, the Grammy-winning recording artist played clips from the video during her world tour earlier this year, which many fans shared across social media. The remainder of the tour has since been postponed due to COVID-19.

Billie continues, “Some people hate what I wear. Some people praise it. Some people use it to shame others. Some people use it to shame me.”

She explains that if she “lived” by the public’s opinions of her, she would “never be able to move.”

Billie challenges those who speak on her body, “If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. But if I shed the layers, I’m a slut.”

“Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why?”

Since her swift rise to fame just a few years ago, Billie has received intense scrutiny for how she dresses. The teenager has acknowledged that she chooses to wear oversized clothing so that the focus stays on her music rather than her body.

She has also spoken openly about her struggles with body image over the years. In an interview with Gayle King, Billie explained that dressing in baggy clothing has actually helped with her self-esteem. “Me and my body’s relationship has been the most toxic relationship you could even imagine,” she said. “The way that I dress has made that relationship so much better.”

Billie finishes her powerful short addressing critics head-on with a chilling statement, “Who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”

YES? GIRL? YES.?
