Ever the trend-setter, TikTok queen Addison Rae is taking a page out of the 90s-kid beauty book with a retro throwback in her locks.
Months after the Obsessed singer debuted a fresh new breakup ‘do (hello curtain bangs!), Addison revealed her latest hair transformation this weekend, showing off lighter locks, a Farrah Fawcett-inspired chop, and the addition of a single feather hair extension.
Introduced in the 1970s as part of the bohemian aesthetic affiliated with artists, musicians, and creatives, feather hair extensions emerged as a symbol of freedom and rebellion against societal norms of that era. The trend cycled back around at the dawn of the 2010s, gaining mainstream appeal after teenage icons like Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, and Ke$ha began sporting these accessories on red carpets, solidifying feather hair extensions as the go-to way to experiment with your hair, as the style was relatively accessible, non-invasive, affordable, and low-maintenance.
However, by 2011, demand for feather hair extensions was so high that America actually faced a feather shortage and salon owners were forced to create these adornments out of hackles (the specific type of rooster feathers used for feather hair extensions) they found at fly-fishing supply shops, driving up the price and thus leading to the trend’s demise shortly after.
Fast-forward a decade, and we’re definitely ready to give feather hair extensions another shot. Especially if it gets us one step closer to looking as good as Addison.
But if history has taught us anything, we suggest making an appointment with your stylist ASAP.
