After sharing the shocking news they had suffered three stokes and a heart attack prior to the release of YouTube Original documentary Dancing with the Devil in February, Demi Lovato has today taken a huge step forward in coming out as non-binary— sharing that they will now identify as they/them.

Last week Demi announced the launch of their newest project, 4D with Demi Lovato, a weekly podcast series that aims to explore “curiosities, experiences, movements, and voices that raise the collective frequency of [the] community of listeners,” in doing this Demi aims to speak to both their own and their guest’s experiences with “identity, creativity, activism, philanthropy and beyond.”

And the series has well and truly kicked off with a bang.

In her promotional post for the first episode on Instagram, Demi explains “I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you. Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. Through this work I have had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.”

Throughout the episode Demi explains to guest Alok Vaid-Menon that the substance abuse explored in Dancing With The Devil stemmed from the fact that they “were ignoring [their] truth…and suppressing who [they] really [are] in order to please stylists or team members…or even fans.” They explain the realisation that “it’s so much more important to live your truth that to ever suppress yourself, because that’s the kind of stuff that happens when you do.”
