Say [it ain’t] so!

Doja Cat says she’s quitting music after fans in Paraguay called her out for not showing enough love to their country while she was there.

The criticism came after Doja tweeted that she was in Brazil. She later tweeted that she didn’t think she “gave Brazil as good enough show tonight,” leading Paraguayan fans to express that they felt shunned by the singer.

The singer took to Twitter to respond to criticism, writing, “I don’t give a fuck anymore I fuckin quit I can’t wait to fucking disappear and I don’t need you to believe in me anymore.”

“Everything is dead to me,” she continued. “Music is dead, and I’m a fucking fool for ever thinking I was made for this[.] This is a fucking nightmare unfollow me.”

Doja went on to tweet, “This shit ain’t for me so I’m out. Y’all take care.” She then changed her Twitter name to “I quit”. She continued to reply to people asking her to focus on her fans that send her love and support, reiterating that she has quit her music career.

A week later, Doja seemingly confirmed she still plans to quit music after she completes her scheduled obligations. “I got videos to film I got performances to do and I got content to drop,” she tweeted. “So I’m pooping it out and dippin. I ain’t gone yet.”

While Doja’s exit has not been officially confirmed by her team, this isn’t the first time the star has expressed her struggles with burnout and mental health.

In October 2021, the 26-year-old tweeted that she is so “run down” by her work schedule that she isn’t happy. “I’m not happy […] Iā€™m never not working. Iā€™m f*cking tired,” she wrote. “Iā€™m too tired to put any effort into this shit cuz Iā€™m so run down from everything else.ā€

Doja’s experience indicates a wider problem in what the music industry expects from young female performers, especially women of colour.

We hope Doja can find peace with whatever direction she chooses for her career.
