Justin and Hailey Bieber are getting candid.

In a joint podcast interview, the Biebers opened up about the challenges they faced at the beginning of their marriage.

“I remember I called [my mom] a few different times, one particular time we were in Brooklyn and I was calling her, crying, and I was like, ‘I just can’t do it. There’s no way that I’m going to be able to do this if it’s going to be like this forever,'” Hailey said in the November 1st episode of In Faith with Chealsea & Judah Smith. “And I just remember [my mom] was so calm on the phone and she was like, ‘It’s going to pass, you’re going to be fine and he’s going to be healthy and we’re here for you’.”

The 24-year-old model went on to say that she “was in it” and had “made the decision” to stick by her husband. “I know for a fact that I’ve loved this person for a very long time and now would not be the time to give up on him. I just wouldn’t do that,” she said.

Justin proposed to Hailey in 2018, one month after reconciling from their 2-year split. In an interview for his 2020 YouTube Originals docuseries, Justin Bieber: Seasons, Hailey admitted that she didn’t accept right away. Instead, she called her parents and asked them to “stop her from doing something crazy” by marrying Justin Bieber. She said she expected them to tell her to sleep on it, but instead they gave her their blessing, telling their daughter that they trust her judgment and think the two are “meant to be.”

Despite her hesitations, the couple officially wed later that year and celebrated with a lavish ceremony in 2019.

“I feel at home wherever he is, so if he’s holed up in the studio, that feels like home to me,” Hailey said about spending late nights in the studio with Justin during the series. Justin admitted he is equally as smitten, as Hailey’s been a hugely positive force in his life— helping him become healthier and happier. Those close to the couple also love them together. Allison Kaye from Justin’s management team revealed in the doc that she “sleeps great now” that Justin is married to Hailey. “I know that someone is there with him if something goes wrong, there’s this very confident, capable, smart adult that is there to help him with it, and I also know that he’s much happier than the Justin Bieber five years ago.”

Throughout the November 1st podcast interview, Hailey went on to say that she was going to “stick it out no matter what the outcome was going to be”.

“Imagine abandoning somebody in the middle of the worst time of their life, potentially. I’m not that type of person,” she said. “It was really hard… There were days where I literally was like, ‘I don’t know if he’s going to be okay.’ Something really deep down inside of me was like, ‘He’s going to be through it,’ I just didn’t know how long it was going to take.”

On his struggles, Justin explained that he was suffering from depression that caused him to have “out of body experiences” and sensory issues. “I had experienced so many things in my life, so many milestones and traveled the world and seen everywhere in the world. And I just got to a place where I was lonely,” he said. “I realised there was some serious healing I needed to go through in order to get to a place where I could be in a healthy, serious relationship because I had a lot of trauma and scars.”

While Justin eventually sought help for his mental health, the couple also credit “consistency” and an inability to quit for keeping their marriage together.

This is not the first time the couple has shared the challenges they’ve faced during their first years of marriage. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Justin opened up, “We don’t want to lose each other. We don’t want to say the wrong thing, and so we’ve been struggling with not expressing our emotions, which has been driving me absolutely crazy because I just need to express myself, and it’s been really difficult to get her to say what she feels.” Hailey also revealed she struggled with the number of people on social media that were rooting for them to fail— largely due to Justin’s previous high-profile relationship with Selena Gomez.

In December 2020, Justin addressed the hate towards his wife after a viral TikTok encouraged Jelena fans to go after Hailey.

Hailey also addressed the barrage of hate she received at the time, taking to Instagram stories to say she would “never in a million years wish for someone to be treated this way and I will never condone this kind of hateful behavior.”

While the Biebers have certainly had a tumultuous first few years of marriage, they seem to be sticking together and fighting for their love.
