Fans Celebrate Confirmed One Direction Reunion With Massive Online Concert

The One Direction fandom is still going strong.

After whispers that former British boy band One Direction would be secretly reuniting for their 10 year anniversary in July, Page Six has now confirmed that a celebration is definitely in the cards.

And it seems fans are seriously on board.

With #OneDirectionReunion and #1DReunion2020 trending worldwide on Twitter, users began discussing their desire to celebrate the possibility of a reunion. Within 24 hours, Twitter user @magjinyoung organised an online concert scheduled to stream live today on Mixlr called ‘One Direction At Home’— a play on the current ‘stay at home’ mandate put in place by many countries in an effort to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the band parted ways nearly 5 years ago, the live-stream quickly gained traction with devoted fans. At the time of publication, the concert is currently the top trending topic on Twitter, has over 17K followers on Mixlr, and has brought in over 1.2 million unique listeners from around the world.

Oh, and we can’t forget to mention that 1D fans actually crashed the site at one point.

Between the high volume of listeners and hundreds of thousands of messages being sent in the live chat, it seems Mixlr’s servers couldn’t handle the Directioners.

Though details of the 1D reunion have not yet be released, it reportedly may involve a TV special or a new single.

On Thursday, band member Liam Payne told The Sun that they’re working on trying to make it happen. “We’ve got a 10-year anniversary coming up so we’ve all been speaking together a lot over the last few weeks which has been really nice.”

Liam did not specify which of the five band members have been involved in the planning, but fans have reason to believe the reunion will involve Zayn Malik, who quit the band in 2015 due to stress.

Zayn’s departure notoriously caused bad blood between himself and his bandmates. The remaining four announced a hiatus in August 2015, promising to return.

Despite reports that members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan all followed Zayn on Twitter today, many fans have debunked this, claiming the four have been following Zayn for a while.

However, fans have noted that Zayn Malik was allegedly reinstated as an official band member on One Direction’s Google search and that their cover photo on Apple Music has changed to a photo of all five band members.
